Conditions + Treatments
Ear wax is a natural and normal feature of healthy ears but if too much accumulates or it becomes dry and thick it can lead to loss of hearing. Ear drops can often be effective in helping wax come out of the ear canal. However, these cannot be used if the eardrum is perforated. If these have not worked or the wax is stuck, micro-suction and cleaning the ear canal with specialised instruments are the best treatments. This can be a little uncomfortable and loud but is not painful.
Tinnitus is common, affecting about a third of adults aged over 50 and many of them have episodes every day. For most people it is not a problem but for some it can become very disabling. Hearing loss is the most common cause of problematic tinnitus but there are many other causes which we will check for at your appointment. Treatment is focused on the cause and any hearing loss will be managed with an expert multidisciplinary approach.
Viral and bacterial infections of the tonsils are extremely common, especially in children and will cause a sore throat with a fever. Most infections will resolve with time and simple painkillers if required. Antibiotics are only prescribed if the tonsillitis is thought to be bacterial. If you suffer with repeated episodes of tonsillitis you may be advised to have your tonsils removed, especially if you are missing a lot of time off work or school.
Dizziness is a term that covers a spinning, lightheaded, unbalanced or woozy sensation whereas vertigo is a specific form of dizziness in which you experience hallucination of vision as if your surroundings are moving around you, or that you are moving. There can be many causes for these symptoms which we will check for and treat.
There are many causes of hearing loss which we will check for and treat if found. The most common cause of hearing loss is simply due to the ageing process and affects most people eventually. Whilst there can be some hereditary component, most is due to exposure to loud noises throughout life which causes damage to some tiny hair cells inside the inner ear. The earliest symptom is loss of hearing of very high pitched sounds such as crickets chirping and bird song. Especially problematic is the loss of ability to hear sounds like "T" and "S" which can lead to mis-hearing of speech. This can make it difficult to have converstaions with other people especially in noisy places like restaurants. Depression, anxiety and even cognitive decline are associated with hearing loss and that is why we recommend early diagnosis and treatment. Following your consultation, we will usually book you to have a hearing test with an audiologist. Using these results, we will customise your hearing aid to your specific needs using discreet, state-of-the-art devices.
There are many causes of nasal blockage; the most are mucosal inflammation (viral colds, allergic/non-allergic rhinitis) and structural narrowing (deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy or nasal-valve compromise), with chronic rhinosinusitis/polyps driving persistent symptoms and smell loss. Blockage only on one side with bleeding or pain warrants urgent assessment. We examine the nose and, if needed, arrange allergy testing or CT. First-line therapy is salt wash and steroid spray. If caused by structural narrowing, options include septoplasty, turbinate reduction, nasal-valve support, or endoscopic sinus surgery.
Globus sensation is the term used when a person has the feeling of a lump in the back of
their throat when there is no abnormality seen in a throat examination. Importantly, there is no pain or difficulty with swallowing and food does not get stuck as it is swallowed. The cause is not known but maybe related to the co-ordination of the muscles involved in swallowing. In this case, expert physiotherapy is advised. Reflux of acid from the stomach into the oesophagus may contribute in some cases. Stress, anxiety or tiredness may trigger globus sensation. Having an excess of mucus running from the nose into the back of the throat (known as postnasal drip) may also make the symptoms of globus sensation worse. Globus sensation is common, affecting about 4% of ENT patients, predominantly middle aged people. A flexible telescope passed via the nose, called nasolaryngoscopy can exclude other diseases and can be done in clinic. This is a painless procedure.
